Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology (FNAC) is a test in which the surgeon draws fluid from any lump in the body using a fine needle. This fluid is then tested in the laboratory to find the nature of the cells in the fluid. This helps the doctor in determining whether the lump is benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). If the lump is clearly visible from the outside then the FNAC test is done without any guidance. However many lumps in the body are deeply embedded and for doing fnac for such lumps, the surgeon would require ultrasound guidance. Ultrasound guided FNAC is used to diagnose Breast Cancer, Fibroadenoma, Tubercular Lump, Infective Etiology etc. If FNAC of the breast shows malignant celss then Biopsy is done to confirm the diagnosis. This can be followed with MRI or CT Scan of the other organs of the body to see the spread of the cancer before commencing the treatment.
