COLOUR DOPPLER KIDNEYS

Patients suffering from High Blood Pressure for a long time may suffer damage to the kidneys. Diabetic patients with uncontrolled sugar also have a tendency of narrowing of the blood vessels. Such patients would have atherosclerosis in almost all the arteries of the body. Colour Doppler of the Renal Arteries is done to see the blood flow in the Renal Arteries. Any kind of blockage in these arteries reduces the flow of blood to the kidneys and result in kidney damage. Any kind of blockage in the Renal Arteries is called Renal Artery Stenosis. If this condition is found in Colour Doppler Study then treatment can be started at the right time in order to prevent damage to the kidneys. If this condition is not diagnosed timely then the patient may end up having Renal Failure which would require regular dialysis or Kidney Transplant.

REPORT

If there is stenosis in the renal arteries then the blood flow in the renal arteries would be greater than 180 cm/sec. If the blood flow in the renal arteries is less than 180 cm/sec then it signifies normal renal artery. Any kind of stenosis of blockage in the arteries would reduce the size of the artery through which blood can flow and this increases the speed of the blood flow in the artery. For fatty patients it is difficult to do Renal Colour Doppler on normal ultrasound machines. We have installed High Resolution Colour Doppler machines which can do the doppler study for fatty patients also. All the patients who are suffering from hypertension or diabetes should get colour doppler of the kidneys, carotid doppler and echocardiography to rule out any blockages in these important blood vessels.

Most of the radiologists are trained in doing Ultrasound Scans but not all the radiologists are comfortable in doing the colour doppler studies. Proper training and adequate experience is required for performing different types of colour dopplers.
